Walk round Delamere with Mike and Thecko

April 9th, 2006 Slick2097 Posted in Delamere, General, Keep Fit No Comments »

Well today we went to Delamere forest, but before we went myself and mike went to the car boot sale (think garage sale my american cousins) at Winwick which whilst ok in size (smaller than usual seeing as that fairground is still there) was a bit poor retro wise. We left and Mike went and did some shopping in tesco to buy some food for later and some things for the walk. On the way back we spotted another car boot sale and popped in for a look. Mike picked up a board game called “Dirty Minds” which looks like fun.

We arrived at my house after dropping off mike’s shopping and I texted Thecko to see if he was ready for the walk, he replied and said could he be picked up on the way. So Mike had his Pot Noodle and I got myself ready, filled my camelback with 1.5l of water and packed 2 apples as we were going to be doing the 7 mile white route.

Diane had expressed an interest in joining us but after a bit of reminder prompting over SMS it turns out she wasn’t going to join us as she had got up late (pah, call that an excuse) and had stuff to do (pah again), so it was just the three of us as we pulled up to the visitors centre. I bought a new yearly pass for the car-parks (£20) and Mike bought a map of the trails incase we got lost.

Mike refused to do the white trail. So we settled for the wussy option of the red trail (only 3 miles!) and set off. The going was easy, the weather was nice and we made it round none the worse for wear. Mike only had 2 rests and on the whole I was impressed with his performance walking around the circuit. We had a bit of an argument when we came to a hill as Mike thought the path followed the lake while I thought it went up the hill.. I was right. Up the hill we went.

After the walk we headed to the nice pub at the bottom of the road. As we turned out of the Delamere car park onto the main road a biker decided that he would ignore all the cars queuing at the temporary traffic light and overtake them all after the car had let me out nearly resulting in the bike merging with my car … not good but as i’d checked the road one last time before fully pulling out I saw him and braked. We arrived at the pub but unfortunately it was full so we set off to find somewhere else to eat as the promise of pub food was what was keeping Mike going through the final stages :) . We arrived in Cuddington and spotted the white barn (I think thats its name, thecko will confirm hopefully) so we stopped there for some grub. MIke had chicken burger, and thecko and myself had a H Mighty Burger, great value at only £4.99 each. They each arrived on a 17″ diameter plate with chips, salad, onion rings, corn on the cob and coleslaw … impressive.

After the meal we were all completely full of food and waddled back to the car for the journey home. The drive home was uneventful and now i’m just waiting for my bath to cool down a tad before I go and de-smell myself. An enjoyable day and i’m looking forward to next weekend when we will either do the red route twice, or tackle the blue routs (5 miles). Mike is going to feel sore in the morning but its all part of the process, exercise gets easier the more you do it so it needs to be done skipper.

You know how you think you have already done something, then it turns out you haven’t … seems i’ve done the same with my blog.

I was sure i’d posted about my being made redundant, but I haven’t. I thought i’d posted about the weekends cycling just gone, but I haven’t. I thought i’d posted about play4charity in a week and a bit, but I haven’t. Basically i’ve been lax and its time for an update.

Ok, redundancy first.
Interoute have seen fit to make my role redundant, which to be brutally honest is absolutely fine with me. My last day is sometime in the 2nd week in feb (I can’t remember the exact day, i’ll have to find that out). My job will now be covered by someone in Geneva or Prague and I wish them well with it. It means I get a nice payout to clear my debts and also some time off work which is very very welcome. I wish interoute all the best and we part with no hard feelings.

Cycling at the weekend.
On Saturday, myself and sam went to delamere to have a cycle round. I found it difficult to keep up with sam even though he’s “out of shape” as he put it (*bollocks*). I had to plain stop at one point and have a sit down. On Sunday we went to Tockholes near bolton with Jerry, Simon, Thecko and myself. Mr Hinch was due to attend but had the world currently falling liberally out of his backside. Glyn was also due to join us but when we contacted him to see why he was late he was wearing a “little miss naughty” pinnie and would give no further details (translation, he was getting some).
So off we set. It was a pleasant if slightly taxing first section, thecko did welleven though he is on a metal steed with no front suspension, we stopped a fair few times but I dont think I was alone in appreciating a rest now and then.
At the halfway point, Thecko stopped at the cars while Jerry (the man machine), myself and Simon went on to the rest of the trail. Its fair to say Thecko would not have made this bit for 2 reasons, its hard going and his bike would not make it. Lots of fast singletrack (in the mud and ice) although at some point my bike lost one of its rear lights, which came off the saddlebag it was clipped to :/ it was my new one as well to make it doubly worse. We made it as far as the village and then turned round to return along the roads. This was when my legs gave up the ghost, 3 miles from the cars. We (myself and simon) slowed jerry to a crawl but we eventually made it back to the cars.
Although I was totally exhausted at the end of the session, it is a very good circuit. We all (apart from the man machine) need to improve our stamina however for the next time we venture there. I intend to do it without being totally drained next time.

Play4Charity.
Play4Charity is a retro gaming event in aid of the Everyman cancer research charity with competitions and gaming celebs (such as Jon Hare, the Oliver Brothers, Rob Hubbard etc). Its over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of December in Kenilworth, which is just south of Birmingham, Tickets are only £10 and its for charity so I expect to see you all there. Re-live the classic games of yesteryear through to the latest hits (I said hits madam), challenge Jon Hare to sensible soccer etc. Should be a great show. Currently Myself, Thecko, Mike, Graeme, Gaz Tee and PK are going to be attending.

Thats about everything thats happened in my life these last few weeks. If I think of anything else i’ve missed, i’ll let you know.

Oh we came first in the pub quiz music round :) woo team Rooger.

Delamere – Monday 30th

May 30th, 2005 Slick2097 Posted in Bicycles, Delamere, Keep Fit No Comments »

Well, i’m alive. 3 days of cycling and i’ve got a reasonable start to a tan as well.

Cycle-o-tron details:

  • Distance: 10.97 miles
  • Time: 1:22:01
  • Average: 8.0 mph
  • Maximum Speed: 37.1 mph (take that mr hinchliffe :) )
  • Total Odo: 140.7 miles

So by my reconning that makes a total distance this weekend of: 69.95 miles .. not bad at all.

My nose is giving me grief today, it keeps bleeding from the right nostril, and i’ve not dont anything to aggrevate it. I think its hay-fever.

I’ve cleaned my bike, not lubed anything or cleaned the brakes, i’ll do that tomorrow morning before I cycle to work. Off for a well deserved bath.

Oh forgot to say, todays attendee’s were:

  • Myself
  • Simon
  • Glyn
  • Kyle
  • Sam (cheers for the lift dude)

Glyn friend “the other simon” arrived, but broke his bike and left early.

This weekend’s cycling.

May 30th, 2005 Slick2097 Posted in Bicycles, Delamere, General, Keep Fit No Comments »

Forgot to give you my cycle-o-tron details for saturday

  • Distance: 13.28 miles
  • Time: 1:43:38
  • Average: 7.6 mph
  • Maximum Speed: 31.1
  • Total Odo: 84.0

Today, myself and mr hinchliffe decided that as my car is un-legal at the moment, we would forgo the driving to delamere and instead have a nice gentle relaxing ride along the transpennine trail (tpt). It was hard.

I got my first puncture :( just as I passed the 100 mile mark on my odometer, a 1cm thorn decided that it would embed itself into my tyre and into the innertube. This caused a slow puncture, I noticed it as I was starting to drift with each pedal movement. I stopped, examined the outside of the tyre, found the thorn and pulled it out. We took off the rear tyre, found the hole, patched it and re-pumped the wheel up in minutes, nice.

Cycle-o-tron details:

  • Distance: 45.70 miles
  • Time: 4:39:30
  • Average: 9.3 mph
  • Maximum: 21.0 mph
  • Total Odo: 129.7 miles

We rode quite far today, mr hinch was just shy of 40 miles himself. My legs are a bit tender at the moment. I’m off to delamere again tomorrow.

I hope my legs hold out.

Delamere – Two Laps

May 22nd, 2005 Slick2097 Posted in Bicycles, Delamere, Keep Fit No Comments »

Well, today was fun. I arrived as Glyn arrived, and we setup our bikes, my front wheel decided it would no-longer line up correctly so I spent much time fiddling with it. Graeme and Simon arrived about 20 mins after that and we got setup. Then it rained. Hard. I put on my waterproof jacket and off we set.

I was in pain as we started as my legs had no recovered from yesterday yet. I carried on regardless. About halfway round the rain had been stopped for a while, so I removed my waterproof and we carried on. My legs now felt fine. We finished the first lap, and we decided to do a second lap, back the way we came.

The second lap felt much much easier, so much so I was wondering if we had missed a section out or something, but the cycle-o-trons confirmed we had done two laps.

We retired to the pub for salads, glyn didn’t eat as he had a meal arrangement for this evening. Whilst at the pub we discussed “the plan” … i’ll talk about this at a later date. We ate our salads (chicken caeser for me) and then we made a dash to our cars as the sky decided quite literally to drop a river on us.

I’ve never seen so much rainfall and hail fall at once before, the sky’s flashed and rumbled away, this pig-weather lasted until I got home. That was the worst weather i’ve ever driven in.

I’ve got the bike in now, and it’s sat in the hall muddy. I’ll clean it tomorrow.

Todays attendee’s are:

  • Myself
  • Simon
  • Graeme
  • Glyn

Cycle-o-tron details:

  • Distance: 12,46 miles
  • Time: 1:20:46
  • Average: 9.2 mph
  • Maximum: 32.5 mph
  • Total Odometer: 70.7 miles

More on “the plan” later ….

Delamere – Sunday.

May 1st, 2005 Slick2097 Posted in Bicycles, Delamere, Keep Fit No Comments »

Back again to delamere we went today with a new companion, Caitlin joined us and she did damn well for her first time on a bike in months. Compared to recent outings it was fairly uneventful, we went to the bike skills section and did a minor downhill, then we went to the real section where you can find people flying 6 – 10 feet in the air. We watched in awe. We found a minor slope we all could tackle and down we went. I nearly came off (even though I was taking it easy) as I mis-judged a ramp, my front suspension took the brunt of the impact and swallowed up the bump allowing me those precious few milliseconds to adlust my weight enough to not come off. Phew.

We were going to go the whole hog and do two laps, but the general consensus after one lap was that enough was enough and it was time for the pub.

I decided on the way home from the pub that I would do my A49 route again so I set off. I got to the junction of the M56 and I decided not to take it as i’ve not been on the motorway with the bike rack on yet … so off I went towards stockton heath. As I got a mile down the road I thought sod it, I need to go on the motorway with the bike rack on, so I turned round and headed back towards the M56. I passed Graeme and Mr Danby (who looked a tiny bit puzzled as I passed them going the other way) and hopped on the M56. It was fine, I had nothing to worry about, the rack held up perfectly and the bike remained secure when I got it home.

I’ve cleaned my bike, the mudguards worked well, keeping most of the crap off of my bike. The Mucoff “bike spray” also helped shift the rest of the mud easier than yesterday. A worthwhile purchase. I’ll lube my chain up for tomorrow with wet lube. We still need to sort out a location for tomorrow though. Now, its bath time.

Oh nearly forgot, today’s attendee’s were:

  • Myself
  • Graeme
  • Glyn
  • Caitlin
  • Mr Danby

Delamere and Bike Carrier

April 30th, 2005 Slick2097 Posted in Bicycles, Delamere, Keep Fit No Comments »

Well, this morning came and the met office’s prediction of the “hottest day of the year so far” seems like a pipe dream. The weather is cloudy with a few light showers. Perfect cycling weather if you ask me, seems two others thought otherwise. Caitlin said the weather was too bad for her, and tufty said he wasn’t feeling well (so hungover then).

I put the bike carrier on the car, took me longer than I expected. Once I got the rack on I went to put my bike on and … disaster. The front of the frame is too chunky (a feature of the hardrock, a square frame near the front for extra rigidity). I can get the part near the seat in ok. I fudge it and simply rest the front in the holder, and tie it down as best I can. I then set off for Graeme’s checking in my rear mirror every minute to make sure it hadn’t moved :)

It hadn’t. All the way there and back again, it was solid. Best £25 i’ve spent in a while.

We did 7.8 miles today, a special note to Graeme who did 7.8 miles and 4 feet … which was the distance he flew when he came off his bike :D .

Attendee’s Today:

  • Me
  • Graeme
  • Simon
  • Glyn
  • Kyle

We decided to go back again tomorrow to delamere, and this time we will do the white course forwards and backwards. Should be fun and a total of about 14 miles.

I’ve washed my bike using muc-off, great stuff that. I also put the muc-off spray on afterwards to put a coating on so dirt shouldn’t stick so well to it next time. I’m going to re-lube my chain shortly. But first I must bathe, I got covered from head to toe in crap and its time to clean it off.

Delamere

April 24th, 2005 Slick2097 Posted in Bicycles, Delamere, Keep Fit No Comments »

Another sunday, another bout of exercise. This time we went to the picturesque forest at Delamere. The course is a lot less strenuous than LadyBower dam mainly because the surface is more uniform and the climbs not so steep.

Attendee’s today:

  • Myself
  • Graeme
  • Glyn
  • Kyle (Glyn’s Son)
  • Mr Manly
  • Jerry

I quite enojoyed today. The sun shone, the ride was good, we even went on the technical section and had a go at some downhill bits and bobs.

Oh I think i’m going to go and get that hardrock sports pro disc bike tomorrow, I need a better bike.
